State House 33

1. Abortion: The 1973 Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court abortion decision.
Warwick Sabin (Democrat)
Candidate Refused to Complete the Survey.

Michael Williams (Libertarian)

I oppose this ruling as I believe the government should have no say in these matters. It is a decision that should be left to the parents and their doctors. I would never advocate for abortion to be used as birth control, outside of being an option with conception due to rape, but I do see where it can be a necessary medical procedure.
2. Marriage: The 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges U.S. Supreme Court same-sex marriage decision.
Warwick Sabin (Democrat)

Michael Williams (Libertarian)

Marriage licensing is another example of government overreach. From a religious standpoint we're allowing the government to regulate, and charge a fee to enter into a holy covenant with God. From a non-religious standpoint it is infringing on our ability to freely build relationships with others of our choosing. I do believe we have the inherent right to love whomever we want, but oppose the ruling on the grounds there was no legal authority to issue it.a
3. Marijuana: The 2016 proposed ballot measure sponsored by Arkansans for Compassionate Care to legalize medical marijuana.
Warwick Sabin (Democrat)

After reading through dozens of published medical reviews (primarily from Israel), and reading through countless stories of the progress people with all types of ailments have made when given medical marijuana, I find it to be a crime against humanity that we restrict it. Marijuana has been used as medicine throughout recorded history, until about one hundred years ago.
4. Taxes: Increasing the motor fuel tax on gasoline and diesel to provide funds for state highway needs.
Warwick Sabin (Democrat)

Michael Williams (Libertarian)

We were told with the last increase that Arkansas roads would be the best in the nation. That was a lie. I drive all over the state daily, and they've only gotten worse. It's past time to get the government waste out of the road systems, and allow private industry to compete for the ability to build them. This will ultimately drive the cost down, while leading to safer roads.
5. Guns: Allowing citizens who may legally own a handgun to visibly and openly carry an unconcealed handgun without a permit—also known as "open carry."
Warwick Sabin (Democrat)
Candidate Refused to Complete the Survey.

Michael Williams (Libertarian)
Support
The second amendment reaffirms our right to own firearms for defense. It does not specifically state how you can carry, allowing us to do so however we choose.
6. Religious Liberty: Requiring business owners to engage in business activities that violate their religious beliefs.
Warwick Sabin (Democrat)
Candidate Refused to Complete the Survey.

Michael Williams (Libertarian)
Support
I believe in the old adage that a business has the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason. I also believe that consumers have the right to make purchases at establishments they feel comfortable in. If enough of the populace find a problem with a particular business they will drive the problem out by shopping with a competitor.
7. Education: The Common Core State Standards being implemented in Arkansas' public schools.
Warwick Sabin (Democrat)
Candidate Refused to Complete the Survey.

Michael Williams (Libertarian)
Oppose
I oppose common core as it has done the opposite of what was claimed it would do. Recent placement test results show that under common core standards students are having a harder time learning as results show a further decline.
8. Term Limits: Reinstating the 1992 Arkansas Term Limits Amendment that generally prohibits members of the Arkansas Legislature from serving more than 6 years in the Arkansas House and 8 years in the Arkansas Senate.
Warwick Sabin (Democrat)
Candidate Refused to Complete the Survey.

Michael Williams (Libertarian)
Support
Issue 3 was full of deception. Where it was claimed that it sought to establish term limits was a flat out lie as we already had them. Career politicians should have no long term place in our state legislature.
9. Civil Liberties: Amending the Arkansas Civil Rights Act of 1993 to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the list of protected classes.
Warwick Sabin (Democrat)
Candidate Refused to Complete the Survey.

Michael Williams (Libertarian)
Undecided
As a Libertarian I seek equal rights and protection for everyone under the law. Setting up protected classes usually does the exact opposite of what is intended, ask the Native Americans.
10. Medicaid Expansion: Continuation of the Arkansas Private Option law passed in 2013 that increased the number of people receiving health insurance through Medicaid by using tax dollars to buy health insurance from private insurance companies under the Affordable Care Act.
Warwick Sabin (Democrat)

Michael Williams (Libertarian)

Regardless of what the federal government has said, it is unconstitutional to force people to pay for something they do not want. I believe the ACA should be repealed, and an affordable insurance pool established for those the ACA was directed at helping. These pools should be based state to state, allowing the citizens of each respective state to determine how they are funded.
11. Lottery: Requiring the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery to increase the percentage of proceeds allocated for scholarships to a minimum of 25%.
Warwick Sabin (Democrat)
Candidate Refused to Complete the Survey.

Michael Williams (Libertarian)
Undecided
As the lottery was intended to fund scholarships, the majority of the proceeds should go to that. 25% tells me there are too many deep pockets currently running it.
